National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) offers a nationally recognised, structured scheme to learn ever advancing techniques for navigating outdoors. This gives NNAS candidates the confidence to independently plan and execute a walk, to help discover the incredible outdoors.
NNAS schemes are suitable for all levels of walkers, from novice experiences through to advanced. At Moorland Ramblings, we offer training and assessment for NNAS bronze and silver awards.
All courses cost £118 (please note this includes an £8 admin fee that is paid to NNAS). All courses can be booked through Moorland Ramblings (email george at: moorlandramblings@gmail.com) or the NNAS website (https://nnas.org.uk/find-a-course/) which also offer more information on the various course offerings.
Courses
Bronze Award
The Bronze National Navigation Award is a practical hands-on award. This course is suitable for anyone new to walking, those who want to start planning their own walks and those who want to get more out of the walks they go on. This practical course, delivered in the beautiful Dartmoor landscape, will take you from relying on friends or guidebooks to being able to plan a walk and follow it successfully.
On day one of the course, we will work through the bronze syllabus out on Dartmoor, learning about different types of maps and how to orientate them, learning about different navigation techniques, learning about how to plan and walk and learning a bit about the local environment.
On day two of the course, we will then consolidate the above new skills on a walk that you’ve helped plan.
The course includes maps, compasses, course notes, use of our outdoor gear (if required) and a digital NNAS Bronze Award certificate upon successful completion. Tea and coffee also included!
Silver Award
The Silver NNAS will give you the skills and confidence to take your adventures off the paths and tracks and go cross-country using intermediate navigation skills.
This 2-day course, delivered entirely on Dartmoor, helps you to learn and develop the skills required to navigate to features and places some distance from paths and tracks. On the course, we will discuss and learn a variety of navigation techniques, giving you the tools and confidence to plan routes and cross open country.
The Silver NNAS builds upon and develops the skills learned on the Bronze NNAS course, so is the natural next step. However, Bronze NNAS is neither mandatory nor necessary for entering onto this course. Silver NNAS is also the perfect preparation for anyone working towards leading group awards, such as the Lowland Leader, Hill & Moorland Leader or Mountain Leader Training.
